Friesian Riding Holidays (Spain) - Siân’s Experience

dressage holiday - Barcelona (spain)

World on Horseback has been offering this iconic retreat since 2019 and we’re always very happy to hear back from our lovely riders who took so much pleasure on their holiday. This place is quite special to us and we’re happy to share Siân’s experience with you!

Can you introduce yourself in a few words?

Hi there, I’m Siân, 29 years old, hailing from Llanelli, Wales.

How long have you been horse riding?

I’ve been riding for 25 years, with a hiatus over the last few.

Which destination did you visit for your riding holiday?

I traveled to Barcelona, Spain.

Why did you choose this destination?

A dream of mine was to have the opportunity to ride a Friesian and when I saw what was on offer I couldn’t resist the temptation (so glad I didn’t).

Was this your first riding holiday? If not, where else have you been?

This was my first riding holiday and it has definitely set a precedent.

Did you feel the horses were well cared for and suited to your riding level?

The horses were extremely well cared for. They were glossy, carried good weight and had impeccable manners.  The pairing between horse and rider was phenomenal (how do they do it ?!). My stallion was exactly what I love to ride and suited to my level of riding. I would have adored a longer retreat.

How were your days organized during the holiday?

The days were studiously organised; there was a white board in the villa with the itinerary for the day and the following.

Could you share one unforgettable memory from this retreat?

Most will say that their unforgettable experience was the beach ride (which is phenomenal), mine was when I went to get the stallion that I was paired to. Unlike the others Vrolijk was laid down, which added a perfect element of humour to a perhaps anxiety but happy situation, he immediately got up when asked and continued to show his character throughout our time together - which I absolutely adored .

What would you recommend to future riders considering this retreat? (e.g., must-visit spots, essential equipment, etc.)

There are a few nearby castles if you’re travelling back on an evening flight and the orange blossom grove is stunning. Your hat, boots and gloves are best as they’re what you’re familiar with.  I’m definitely bringing a rider bag for the beach ride next time (for phone for unforgettable pics that are not yet posted).
I also hired a car to travel to where we were staying (never driven a car abroad before) and would highly recommend as it gives you that flexibility both prior to and post trip.

Do you have an Instagram account where people can follow your travels and horse riding adventures? Would you like us to share this?

@ffion_siangriffiths  I’ll share my adventures on a Lusitano boot camp and of course more friesian horse riding holidays to come soon!

Any additional comments or feedback you would like to share?

Don’t hesitate, book it. You’ll have an unforgettable experience. Honestly had the best experience and super excited to go again. Hope to meet my previous stallion Vrolijk again but I’m sure it’ll still be amazing regardless.
