Riding Holiday in Iceland - Mariana’s Experience

transhumance across SOUTHERN ICELAND

Ever dreamt of exploring Iceland on horseback? Mariana fulfilled this dream in June 2024, riding through the country's stunning landscapes while driving a herd of 50 horses. She shares her unforgettable experience and why Iceland is a must-visit for horse lovers and adventurers.

Can you introduce yourself in a few words?

My name is Mariana, I am 34 years old and I am from Bogota, Colombia.

Which destination did you visit for your riding holiday?

In June 2024, I joined a riding holiday for 4 days in Iceland with World on Horseback’s partner.

How long have you been horse riding?

I've been riding horses for almost 12 years. I started when I was 7 and became a dressage rider competing non-stop until I was 16. I left horse riding before turning 17 due to external factors and responsibilities and I got back into the saddle when I turned 30 years old. I remember crossing a horse riding school and thinking that it would be nice to take a trail. Since then I realized how much I missed the sport, my childhood passion and decided to start taking weekly classes.

It's been 4 years since I made the best decision of my life and it has been an incredible journey that I hope I can continue pursuing for the rest of my life.

Why did you choose this destination?

I always dreamt of visiting Iceland due to its unique scenery and unmatched beauty. Everything you see there you cannot see it anywhere else in the world. Also, I've always found Icelandic horses so adorable and brave from what I've read on the internet. I had never seen one before until I came to Iceland and they really surprised me with how beautiful and friendly they are.

Was this your first riding holiday? If not, where else have you been?

I've done one in India before in the state of Rajasthan, approximately 3 years ago. I rode the famous indigenous breed, Marwari horses throughout the dry Rajasthani desert.

Did you feel the horses were well cared for and suited to your riding level in Iceland?

Yes, the horses are super cared and loved by the owners. I was surprised to see the owners knew all their names since there were so many. But they are devoted to their horses and I hope I can be the same one day for my own horse.

How were your days organized during the holiday?

We started the day with a full meal breakfast and making our own lunch sandwiches as we would stop at a specific spot in the middle of nowhere to have our lunch. Every day, after a 5 to 6 hour ride, we would arrive at a new cottage and get the most heartwarming dinner. It's a physically demanding holiday as we spend many hours in the saddle but completely worth it!!

Could you share one unforgettable memory from this retreat?

I have so many I don't know which is better! But one that struck me the most was crossing rivers and getting wet feet with the water at 4 degrees Celsius and riding with a loose herd of Icelandic horses. I cannot even describe how surreal that was. It was living inside a painting full of colours and life!

What would you recommend to future riders considering this retreat? (e.g., must-visit spots, essential equipment, etc.)

My recommendation is to take good winter clothes and layer up as it is quite cold (even in summers). I underestimated the weather and I ended up buying clothes. However, if you like the Icelandic wool sweaters, get the one with the horses, it's so cute and perfect for horse lovers!  Also, get a mobile case with a strip so that you can hang around your shoulders to take all the photos and videos without worrying that it will fall.

Do you have an Instagram account where people can follow your travels and horse riding adventures? Would you like us to share this?

This is my account @marianamontejo if you want to check my content from the trip! I am hoping to do more in the future to exciting places! This riding holiday really changed my life and has been one of the best holidays I've ever taken.

Any additional comments or feedback you would like to share?

Get ready to get dirty and feel your body sore but with some incredible memories that will last for a lifetime !
